How Can I Help My Child at Home with Literacy?

The BEST gift you can give to your child is the gift of READING!  Students are successful in school when their entire family is engaged in communicating with books and games at home.  Here are some great learning activities you can do at home to increase your child’s reading skills:

  • READ, READ, READ! When you are reading together, ask some simple questions to help increase comprehension.
    • What is the story about?
    • Who are the characters and what role do they play in the story?
    • What do you predict will happen next?
  • WRITE -- Encourage your child to write a letter to a classmate, teacher, family or friend. Reading and writing go hand in hand to increase academic growth.
  • LISTEN-- Listen to audiobooks in the car instead of playing video games. This allows your child to focus on the words of the story to understand the plot, characters, and setting. Children use more brain power when listening to a story then playing a video game!

Enjoy READING and WRITING with your child!  They will thank you some day for giving them the “Gift of Literacy”!
