Principal's Message

For the LOVE of Reading in February!

Dear Families,

Reading is the most important thing you can help your elementary child with to excel in school.  Try these tips to encourage your child to read and hopefully build a love of reading!

  • Play quick word games when you are in the car, waiting in line at the grocery store or even while you are folding laundry.  Such games as rhyming words; changing beginning consonants such as “nap” to “rap”; and what starts like “tree” — “trip” will build reading skills at an early age.
  • Read it AGAIN...Encourage your child to read familiar books to build speed and   accuracy.
  • Have a variety of reading materials available at home such as comic books,          magazines, and even recipes.  My boys’ favorite reading materials were the free leaflets at the grocery store or gas station.
  • When you are in the car, listen to audiobooks and talk about what is happening during each chapter.
  • Look for a series of books to read together.  Reading a  series of books helps kids get familiar with the tone,    characters, and the author’s theme.

Enjoy the month of February sharing the LOVE of books!

Sincerely,

 Mrs. Elkins
