How Can I Help My Child at Home with Literacy?
The BEST gift you can give to your child is the gift of READING! Students are successful in school when the entire family is engaged in communicating with books and literature. Here are some great learning activities you can do at home to increase your child’s reading skills:
- READ, READ, READ! When you are reading together, ask some simple questions to help increase comprehension.
- What was the story about?
- Who are the characters and what role did they play in the story?
- What do you predict will happen next?
- WRITE — Encourage your child to write a letter to a classmate, teacher, family, or friend. Reading and writing go hand in hand to increase academic growth.
- LISTEN — Listen to audiobooks in the car instead of playing video games. This allows your child to focus on the words of the story to understand plot, characters, and setting. Children use more brain power when listening to a story then playing a video game!
With the fall season here, it is a GREAT time to STOP and READ together as a family. One of my favorite quotes is, “A FAMILY THAT READS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER!”
